Treating Your Acid Reflux Naturally

Some think that acid reflux is just a minor inconvenience or irritation, but for those who suffer from it they know that it's downright painful and can interfere with their everyday life and their sleeping patterns as well. While there are many antacids you can use and prescription medications that can help, you can treat your condition naturally and without harsh chemicals.

Understanding what causes this condition is the first step toward effectively treating your acid reflux condition. When you eat certain foods that are high in acid content this causes too much acid to be in your stomach. Also, if you eat too much your stomach just naturally produces more acid to deal with this excessive amount of food. When there is too much acid in your stomach it naturally spills over and back up into your esophagus, and this is what we call acid reflux. So while the pain may be in your esophagus or midsection, the problem is actually in your stomach.

Realizing how this condition comes about means that you can then take steps to treat your acid reflux naturally. Beware of overly spicy foods and those that contain or are cooked in oil, since oil triggers your stomach to produce more acid. This means fried foods such as French fries, fried chicken, chicken fried steak, and so on. Foods that have a high acid content naturally include citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, berries, and dairy products. These typically trigger acid reflux in most sufferers. And since overeating can also trigger an attack, you need to watch your portions as well. It's tempting to keep eating even when you know you should stop because you may not experience symptoms until you've already overeaten; it's not likely that you get a warning sign before the acid kicks in.

Most people get bouts of acid reflux at night when they're trying to sleep. Usually this is because they are prone and so the acid can easily spill out of the stomach and into the esophagus, as opposed to when you're sitting up or standing and gravity pulls the acid down where it belongs. It usually helps to put something under the feet of your bed or prop yourself up a bit with some extra pillows. If you usually have attacks at night, refrain from eating for at least three hours before bedtime, and drink plenty of water so your digestion is much easier.

Some foods such as Bananas have long been recognized for their anti-acid effects that protect against stomach ulcers and ulcer damage. Amino Acid helps to regulate growth, digestion and maintaining the body's immune system. Papaya contains lipase, which assists in Fat and Cellulose digestion.

If you do all of this and find that your pain in the abnormal area keeps coming back and it is especially painful, or you have difficulty swallowing then it may be time to see a doctor. If left unchecked, chronic acid reflux can lead to more serious conditions and diseases of the esophagus and entire digestive system.
